What Octopus Group is

Octopus Group describes its business as entirely Australian owned. The App Store lists JL & JK PTY LTD as the app developer, while Google Play shows the developer name Octopus Developer.

It is a survey panel: most of the surveys members see are run by Octopus Group's clients rather than by Octopus Group itself. Members are invited to take part, and rewards are shown as cash amounts rather than points.

How members earn

The main way to earn is by completing surveys. The reward for each survey depends on its length and is shown on the survey notification before a member starts it. Octopus Group's terms state a rate of $0.28 per minute, based on a predetermined survey length, for completed surveys, but this is the rate written in the terms, not a figure any member is set to receive.

A member who starts a survey but does not qualify can still get a small cash amount; the FAQ gives a minimum of $0.05, though the terms say this is at Octopus Group's discretion.

There is also a Tell-A-Friend referral program. Under the rules that took effect from June 1, 2023, a member earns $2 when a referred friend completes their first valid survey, then $1 for each of the next 23 surveys that friend completes, up to $25 per friend. Monthly Booster promotions are not offered every month and must be activated in the member portal, and any extra reward from a booster can take up to 90 days to be credited.

How it pays and who can join

Octopus Group pays by electronic funds transfer (EFT) to an Australian bank account for members in Australia, or to a New Zealand bank account for members in New Zealand. Rewards can also be exchanged for an Octopus Group Flexi eGift Card, sent by email, which the member then exchanges for a store voucher. The gift cards come in set values of $20, $40, $60, $80 and $100, at a 4% member discount, so a $20 card costs $19.20.

A minimum of $20 must be in the rewards account before a bank transfer or an e-gift card purchase can be made; bank transfers above that go up in $5 steps and must be made in a single transaction.

Joining is free. Members must be aged 15 or over, with anyone under 18 needing a parent's or legal guardian's consent to register. A member must be located in the country registered on their account (Australia or New Zealand) and must have an Australian or New Zealand mobile number that can send and receive SMS; virtual numbers are not accepted. Before redeeming rewards, members aged 18 or over must verify their identity with a driver's license or passport and a face capture, or complete a video meeting if that is not possible.
