About Spades
Spades is a trick-taking card game played with a standard 52-card deck, where spades are always the trump suit. In this version, you play against computer opponents. Before each hand, you bid on how many tricks you expect to win, then play your cards to try to meet that bid and score more points than your opponents.
How to play Spades
Each player is dealt a hand of cards and bids a number of tricks they think they can win. Play proceeds card by card, with the highest card of the led suit winning the trick, unless a spade is played, which beats any other suit. You must follow suit if you can. After all tricks are played, points are scored based on whether your bid was met, and the game continues until a winning score is reached.
Tips for playing Spades
- Bid conservatively at first - overbidding and falling short costs you more points than a low, safe bid.
- Save your high spades for later tricks, when they can capture cards your opponents were counting on winning with.
- Pay attention to which suits have already been played so you can judge what cards your opponents might still be holding.
