How to play Pente
Players alternate placing one stone per turn, choosing any open spot on the board. You win by aligning five stones of your color in a row, vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, or by capturing five pairs of your opponent's stones. Captures happen when you flank a pair of opponent stones in a straight line from both ends. Flanking a single stone does not count as a capture.
Tips for playing Pente
- Watch for two of your stones sitting next to each other in a line - an opponent can capture them if they flank both ends.
- Building toward five in a row and threatening captures at the same time puts more pressure on your opponent than doing just one.
- Check all directions, vertical, horizontal, and both diagonals, before placing a stone, since alignments and captures can form in any of them.
